Monkstown Through in AIG Senior Cup

AIG Senior Cup Area Semi Finals 2018 Cork Golf Club Sunday 24th June 2018Monkstown were the first club to book their place in the Munster finals in Thurles, marking the third time in four years that they have reached the finals of the AIG Senior Cup.

16 teams started in Cork Golf Club on Saturday morning, and two rounds later there were just four.  Bandon faced Kinsale and Mallow were up against Monkstown this morning.  The two semi-finals were close matches, with the Bandon Kinsale derby needing three extra holes to decide the winner.  Bandon’s Ger Tobin was the hero as he won the 21st hole to take Bandon through to area final.

John Murphy and James Sugrue both came through the first matchplay round of the British Open yesterday, propelling them into the final 32 with hope increasing of an extended run in Royal Aberdeen.  There was a bit of a struggle for both golfers yesterday, Sugrue took a slight lead in his match early on but he had to wait until the 19th before he finally dispatched Australia’s Michael Kyle.

Sugrue and Murphy through in British Amateur

James Sugrue and John Murphy have both qualified for the matchplay stage of the British Amateur after the opening strokeplay quaifier.  The hot shots comfortably made it through along with Robin Dawson, Rowan Lester and Conor Purcell.

John Murphy qualified just outside the top ten, he shot a 69 on the Mulcar Links yesterday to close on +2.  Murphy was three under after four holes and steady golf under pressure saw him maintain a solid level of golf.  This time last week, he was still only the fourth alternative on the waiting list.

James Sugrue, who is part of the Irish squad at the event, was three shots back from Murphy in 40th place.  He shot two rounds of 73 on both Royal Aberdeen and Mulcar Links.  Both golfers have proven themselves at the highest levels, Sugrue is the reigning South of Ireland champion while Murphy won the St Andrew’s Links Trophy less than two weeks ago.  A good run in the matchplay stages will help their case for selection for the six man Irish team for the European Championships.

There was disappointment for Peter O’Keeffe who missed out on the matchplay stage, he missed the cut by two shots after a disappointing final few holes in yesterday’s second round.  The matchplay qualifier (for those tied in 64th place) takes place this morning with the first round proper starting later this morning.  James Sugrue is out at 11.08 and John Murphy starts at 13.51.

No Joy for Mallow or Cork in Tralee, AIG Cups & Shields Munster Finals

AIG Senior Cup Munster Finals 2017, Saturday 12th August 2017There was no joy for Cork clubs in Tralee on Saturday as both Cork and Mallow exited at the semi-final stage of the Munster finals.  Mallow were in action in the AIG Senior Cup and for a while it looked like they would beat Limerick in their semi-final.  Paul McCarthy and James Sugrue led from the front and both recorded impressive wins, McCarthy won 3&2 while Sugrue won on the 14th.  Conor Dowling lost match, as did Brian Attridge meaning the result would be decided by Adam Boland’s match with Limerick’s Justin Kehoe.  They were all square on the 15th but Kehoe won the 16th to go one up.  Boland made a huge six foot putt on the 17th to avoid losing and a great birdie on the 18th meant that the match went on to the 19th.  Both players found the fairway on the additional hole and the advantage swung Continue reading →

Munster Finals time in Tralee

Tralee Golf Club will host the AIG Cups & Shields finals this weekend with three Munster pennants on offer.  It’s eight years since Tralee have hosted the finals and Arnold Palmer designed links will provide a spectacular setting for the three finals.  Two competitions are down for decision on Saturday with Cork and Mallow in action.  Cork will be hoping to retain their Munster title in the AIG Barton Shield, but they’ll have to get past hosts Tralee in the semi-final.  Waterford Castle face Castletroy in the other semi-final.  Mallow unseated holders Monkstown and beat a good Cork side in the Senior Cup and they’ll be hoping to maximise their first appearance at the Munster finals in several years.  Ballybunion carry Kerry hopes in the AIG Senior Cup, the West Munster winners will face Dungarvan who were the winners in the East Munster section.  Limerick came through in North Munster and they will face Mallow who Continue reading →

Mairead Martin wins Irish Girls Close Championship

Kanturk’s Mairead Martin claimed her first national title today, and did so in front of a huge crowd of supporters in Mallow Golf Club.  Martin claimed the Irish Girls Close title after five days of golf in Mallow, and did so in style – never going beyond the 15th hole in the five matchplay rounds.  After confidently striking her first tee shot down their middle of the fairway, Mairead went 1 up through1 and didn’t ease up from there. Four up at the turn, birdies at the 10th and 11th saw Martin go 6 up with 7 holes to play. The match was finished in style with an eagle from Mairead at the 444-yard par 5 12th to close out the game 7&6.

“I’m delighted to win, my short game was on form this week, I pitched in for eagle on the 12th this afternoon to win the match which was a good way to finish”” said a happy Mairead.  “I was at home in my own bed all week too which was also nice and to have so much support from the club was class! Cork challenge continues in Mallow, Irish Girls Close

Rachel Thompson Baltray May 2017Cork’s Rachel Thompson is through to the final four in the Irish Girls Close.  Thompson came through two tough rounds in Mallow today, and the leading qualifier is safely through to tomorrow’s semi-final.  The Cork golf club member wrapped up yesterday’s first round match on the 13th winning 7&5 but today she went to the 19th before getting past Emma Forbes from Portrush.  This afternoon her match with Georgina Carr went to the 17th with the Cork girl taking the match on a 2&1 margin to put her through to tomorrow’s semi-final with Maeve Rooney.  There were wins too for Mairead Martin and Valerie Clancy, both golfers also come through two matchplay rounds today to qualify for the semi-final.  They now face each other in the second semi-final tomorrow morning.

Sara Byrne is the fourth Cork golfer in action in Mallow, she’s through to the semi-final of the plate competition after losing her first round match yesterday.  The Douglas golfer needed an extra hole this morning to claim a place in the quarter finals.  She had an impressive 7&6 win this afternoon beating Chloe O’Connor from Roscommon.  She will face Nicole McGavisk Continue reading →
