Munster Strokeplay closing date approaching

Holder Cathal Butler (Kinsale) won the event last year after an exciting play-off win over Cork’s Gary O’Flaherty. Butler has already entered, as has Kinsale’s John Murphy who won the Munster Student’s Championship in Cork GC this week. This year the Munster Strokeplay is a counting event for the GUI Order of Merit (Willie Gill Award) and that should be an added incentive for golfers to travel to Cork for the May Bank Holiday weekend. The event has been a WAGR counting event for several years, and it also counts towards the Munster Senior Order of Merit. Last year there were over 50 golfers playing off scratch or better, and the indications are that a similar standard will be seen when the event gets underway on Saturday 29th April. Peter O’Keeffe (+2.9), Ian O’Rourke (+2.6), Mark Power (+2.5) and James Sugrue (+2) head the entrants at present. A total of 78 golfer will compete in the opening 36 holes, with the top 39 (plus ties) going forward for the second 36 holes on Sunday 30th April.
No joy for Davis College in Schools Senior Championship

Davis College Mallow
Davis College Mallow lost out in the Munster Final of the Irish Schools Senior Championship yesterday but only after giving favourites De La Salle Waterford a tough test in the final. The finals took place in Cahir Park and it was a credit to the course and specially the staff that the course was open. A modified course was in play, with the competition taking place over two loops of the nine holes on the clubhouse side of the River Suir. Davis College had a good win over Crescent College (Limerick) in the semi-final, winning 3-2. De La Salle had beaten Douglas Community School in their semi-final, they closed out the first three points as they proved too strong for the Cork side.

Munster Golf update Handicap Committee Advice
Munster Golf have just released an updated list of key points for club handicap committees. The initiative follows a commitment made at the Annual Delegates Meeting to continue the efforts to stamp out handicap cheating.
The eight page document includes a very important piece on the mandatory reporting of all golf scores – including non qualifying events. There is a feeling that not all golfers of club officials realise the obligations that are already in place regarding the reporting of scores. The document also contains important references to the Rules of Golf and the CONGU rulebook which should help to educate and empower Handicap Secretary’s, Competition Secretary’s and everyone involved with competitions at club level.
Reporting Scores – Mandatory – Home or Away – All forms of Golf
(b) Non Qualifying Scores. – 4 Balls/ Scrambles/Classics/Societies – Relevant clauses are at (4.5(b), pg 19), (8.10 + 8.12, pg 24), (23.7 IrelandNote- pg 51) Direction from Union to report NQ Scores for immediate consideration/action for General Play Adjustment (Except Category 1 players). 2016 a Year to Remember for John Murphy
Kinsale’s John Murphy capped off a great year last week when he announced that he would be heading to the US in the second half of 2017 on a golf scholarship. Later this year Murphy will head for Kentucky to take up a place with the Cardinals at the University of Louisville. Murphy will join Galway’s Devin Morley who started in Louisville in 2016, and Assistant Coach Aaron O’Callaghan who is in his third year coaching at the division one college.
The announcement of Murphy’s move to the US had been one of his options over the past few months, and while there are exciting times ahead, John can look back at a great 2016. “I have so many memories from 2016 that I will cherish forever” said Murphy. “There are some stand-out memories from 2016, such as winning the European Boys’ D2 championships in Czech Republic and retaining the Kerry Continue reading
Murphy First Golfer to win Twice
John Murphy became the only golfer to win the Munster Junior Golfer of the Year in November. Murphy picked up his second successive award from Munster Golf having also won the Boys Order of Merit. Having competed in all of the provincial events at Boys and Youths levels, Murphy gave himself every chance of performing well in the Order of Merit. He scored well in the Irish Youths and the Irish Boys which ultimately separated him from the other contenders.
Murphy was delighted to be the first golfer to win the award more than once. “It was a great honour to receive this award once, not to mind twice” said John. “This time two years ago I was playing off about five and had been pretty unsuccessful in championships, with no real status on the boys scene. I am delighted with how far I have come in the last 2 years. Winning this award twice was something that was far from my thoughts in 2014. It is great to see that the Muster GUI have acknowledged my golf with this award in the last two years, and I am very grateful for this. It is very special for me that I was the first ever person to win this award twice in a row, and I will never forget Continue reading
Butler finishes the Year on Top
Normally the transition from Boy’s golf to Men’s golf can take a few years, but this season Cathal Butler proved the jump can happen very quickly. The Kinsale golfer started his first season after Boy’s golf with three big wins. In March he won the Fota Island Senior Scratch Cup, shooting an impressive 67 on the two-time Irish Open course, and what’s more impressive is that he finished five clear of a strong field. He followed that in May by winning the Munster strokeplay, beating Cork’s Gary O’Flaherty on the second hole of a sudden death play-off. After being selected for the Munster Interprovincial team, Cathal rounded off the summer with a win in the Killarney Senior Scratch Cup. Outside of the scratch cups, Butler had several good performances in the national championships. He made it through to the last 16 in the West, and the last 32 in the East. He also finished tied for Continue reading

Cork Golf Club were recently awarded the Munster Club of the Year award from Munster Golf. The club that was first founded in 1888 has been central to Cork and Munster golf for over 125 years and while the tradition creates a legacy, the club has continually evolved and developed to remain at the forefront of the sport. In 2010 – 2012 major alterations were carried out under Martin Hawtree to restore the MacKenzie design. Over the years the Club has hosted many major Amateur and Professional Championships over the years. Graeme McDowell won the Irish Youths in 1999. Shane Lowry won the Irish Close in 2007.
