Keelan McCarthy (Lee Valley), 2018 winner of the Bruen Youths Trophy
Muskerry will hold the annual Bruen Boys and Youths Trophy on Monday 26th August, and there will be plenty of golfers hoping to add their name to the list of famous winners. Lee Valley’s Keelan McCarthy is the holder and he’ll be looking to follow Cathal Butler and Sean Desmond who are among very few to win the Bruen Youths twice. Kinsale’s Butler won in 2013 and 2014, and Desmond won in 2016 and 2017. The Bruen Youths started in 1986 as a boys (under 18) competition but later moved to youths level. Muskerry have booked their place in the Munster finals of the Fred Daly Trophy. The Cork side will be hoping to repeat the win of 2017 and remove the memory of the final loss of 2018 when they head to Clonmel in just over two weeks time. To reach the finals three years in a row is a sizeable achievement, they faced Douglas in the area final last Sunday which was held in Cork Golf Club. With a large crowd watching Muskerry took the lead and held on to claim the win and book their place in the Munster finals with a positive performance from the team. Fionn Hickey put the first point on the board for Muskerry with a win over Kevin Collins, and Jack Egan added a second point when he beat Ross Higgins. Mark Hill won a point for Douglas when he beat Eoghan O’Shaughnessy but the match was over when Stephen 
The second Cork Fourball Championship event takes place in Muskerry on Wednesday and interest is building following the successful first event earlier this month. The series runs over six qualifying dates with the top three pairs from each qualifier advance to the series final which takes place at the end of September. From that event, the lucky winners will head off on a golf trip to Portugal. The winners of the first qualifier were Paul O’Keeffe and Brian O’Keeffe from the home club. They scored 45 points to win in a competitive field. The other two pairs to qualify were Derek Kelly (Lismore) & Martin O’Driscoll (West Waterford) and Owen Barrett and Tony Hayes (Muskerry). There might be a father & son final tomorrow, or it could be O’Sullivan v O’Sullivan, in any case there are just four left from the 64 starters in the Ford Muskerry Junior Scratch Trophy. Fota Island have two golfers left, father and son David and John Howard. David beat Jack Boyd (Muskerry) and David Byrnes (Castletroy) today to advance, while Dad John beat fellow Fota Island member Evan O’Connell this morning, and followed that by beating Muskerry Captain (and former winner) Diarmuid Linehan. Both Howard’s will have their hands full in the morning, they face two people closely linked with Muskerry. Although Mark O’Sullivan is currently a Cork member, he grew up on the course in Muskerry and will no doubt be hoping that local knowledge will help him along the way tomorrow. Adrian O’Sullivan will play John Howard and he’s a lifelong Muskerry member and like Mark, he’ll be hoping that his experience around the Cloghroe links will see him though against his Fota opponent. Play tomorrow morning will get underway at 8am, with the final schedule for 1pm. The ultimate winner will have come through a 300 to 1 challenge, a strokeplay qualifier and six rounds of matchplay to be crowned the Ford Muskerry Junior Scratch Trophy Champion 2019.
