Munster set for Interpro’s, Day 1 at Carlow Golf Club

Munster Captain Phil Cooney has named his pairings for this mornings foursomes match which tee’s off in Carlow at 8am.  Peter O’Keeffe and Andrew McCormack lead out the Munster side which will face Leinster.  The seven golfers to contest the singles will be announced later this morning with the singles scheduled to get underway at 1pm.

Cooney is looking for his third interprovincial title and has a strong team in place to challenge.

Boland rises to 5th in Castletroy, Irish Boys Round 3

Mallow’s Adam Boland produced another sub par round today to move into the top five at the Irish Boys Amateur Open.  Boland was in fine form with plenty of birdies going in, including two important ones on the 15th and 16th.  The birdies were mixed with a few bogies and the only real error of the day happened on the tricky 13th when Boland had a double bogey six.  Boland is just four shots off the lead meaning that a win will be a big ask, but another consistent round with a score of par or better should see the Mitchelstown man improve on his current position.

Both Mark Power and John Brady went backwards after rounds of 74 and 77 and the lead is now held by England’s Danny Daniels and Jack Cope.  They’re both on -5, two shots ahead of Power.

Byrne and Coughlan carry GB&I Junior Vagliano hopes

Junior Vagliano 2017_2Sara Byne and Claire Coughlan Ryan are in Italy this week representing Great Britain & Ireland in the Junior Vagliano Trophy.  The two day competition gets underway in Golf Club Bogogno tomorrow.  Sara was selected as a player while Claire retained her position as team captain.   Claire was a member of the winning Vagliano Trophy team at Chantilly Golf Club, France, in 2005 and memorably, along with partner Anne Laing, defeated Michele Wie twice in the 2004 Curtis Cup match at Formby Golf Club.

Boland continues fine form in Castletroy, Irish Boys Round 2

GUI LogoAdam Boland continued his good form in Castletroy yesterday.  The Mitchelstown man shot a one over par 73 and is still inside the top ten at the halfway stage.  It could have been better too for Boland, he had a costly double bogey on the 17th which saw him drop from -2 to level par.  Prior to that Boland had rebounded from two early bogies with three birdies to get back under par.

Mallow’s Ed Walsh bounced back from a disappointing opening 80 to shoot 74 in the second round.  Walsh has a great chance of making the 54 hole cut, he’s currently 64th but a round that’s close to par or better will help him to get inside the top 50.  Sean Leonard and Shane Galvin are just inside the top 100 after shooting rounds of 80 and 79, both are long shots when it comes to qualifying for the final round on Friday.

Rosslare’s John Brady holds the halfway lead on -7 after rounds of 68 and 69.  Overnight leader Mark Power shot a level par round and he’s in second place on -5.

Boland leads Cork challenge in Castletroy, Crean takes top ten spot in Leinster Seniors

AIG Senior Cup, Mallow Golf Club, Sunday 25thth June 2017Mallow’s Adam Boland shot a one under par 71 in Castletroy yesterday in the opening round of the Irish Boys Open Championship.  Fresh from a positive weekend with Mallow’s Senior Cup team, Boland bogied the 3rd hole but followed it with three birdies on the back nine to turn on -2.  He opened the back nine with two bogies but got a shot back soon after and signed for a 71.  That has him in 8th place, four shots behind defending champion Mark Power who’s in the lead on -5.  Sean Leonard and Jack Egan will need to improve today if they are to make the cut.  Both are on +6, and Kanturk’s Daniel Continue reading →

Crean & O’Donovan Challenge in Leinster.

Jerry Crean and Donal O’Donovan are tied for fourth after they both shot opening rounds of 76 in the Leinster Seniors Open at Dun Laoghaire.  Kinsale’s Crean had a tough start with bogies on the first and second, and a double bogey on the ninth meant that he turned on +4.  He made the trip back in level par though, and that saw him finish in a tie for fourth place.  Donie O’Donovan had a better start with a birdie on the 2nd, but a few dropped shots saw him turn on +2.  He followed that with eight straight pars but a mistake on the final hole cost him two shots and he also signed for a 76 (+4).

Holder Micheal Quirke is one shot back alongside Tom Cleary on 77, both are in a large group that are tied for 10th place.  Both are six shots off the lead and still in with a chance of challenging in tomorrow’s final round.  Fota’s George Mellerick is back in the pack after a disappointing 85.  Dun Laoghaire Golf Course proved to be a very testing challenge for the players at the Leinster Seniors Championship today despite the very benign conditions.  Frank Flynn (Laytown & Bettystown) leads Continue reading →

Attridge seals win for Mallow, AIG Senior Cup

Mallow pulled off a great win today in the AIG Senior Cup, defeating Cork on the final hole in the final match.  Brian Attridge won the 16th and 17th to move from one down to one up and he held his advantage on the par three 18th to record a memorable win at home for the North Cork club.

Earlier in the afternoon, Paul McCarthy led out the side against Cork’s John Hickey.  Hickey won the 1st and held onto the lead after the 2nd, but that was the only time that he would be ahead.  McCarthy won the 3rd and 4th to take the lead and although Hickey levelled it twice, McCarthy took the lead back.  He was two up on the 17th tee and although Hickey won that hole, McCarthy halved the 18th to secure the first point for Mallow.  James Sugrue added the second point soon after.  Like the first match, Cork had the early advantage with Ian O’Flynn holding Continue reading →

Sean Desmond who helped Monkstown to two wins today

Sixteen teams started out in Mallow this morning and now just four remain after a bumper day of golf in North Cork.

Munster Champions Monkstown advanced this morning with a win over Muskerry.  This afternoon no less than three matches went to the 19th before they overcame Muskerry in a thrilling match.  Monkstown face Cork tomorrow, the reigning Barton champions saw off Castlemartyr.

Kinsale’s young guns are still in the hunt, they had two good wins, accounting for Mahon and Bandon.  Hosts Mallow were expected to play well and they obliged with a win over Fota Island although Fota made them work for their win. This afternoon they faced Lee Valley who beat Douglas in the first round this morning.  The hosts prevailed this evening to set up at match with Kinsale tomorrow morning.  The first match gets underway at 9am tomorrow.
