AIG Cups & Shields kick off in Macroom & Muskerry

Macroom and Muskerry will be busy places this weekend as the first major weekend of the 2016 Cups & Shields campaign starts.  The AIG Jimmy Brien Shield will see 22 Cork clubs battle over four matchplay rounds with the hope of qualifying for the Munster finals in Douglas in July.

2015 South Munster winners Lee Valley were beaten last week in one of two preliminary matches in Macroom. Bandon got the better of the Munster semi-finalists and they now go on to face Raffeen Creek in the first match tomorrow morning.  Skibbereen beat Bantry Bay in the other preliminary match and they’ll face Lisselan in the first round proper.  Hosts Macroom play Fernhill and Dunmore face Kinsale in the other match.

Fred Daly first round matches start today

Interest in junior golf is building up as this weekend the first round of the Fred Daly Trophy takes place.  Cork, Monkstown, Douglas and Muskerry will all host the matches as Ireland’s premier junior golf competition gets underway.  This year the competition format has changed.

Fred Daly Trophy Draw

The GUI Annual General Meeting voted to reduce the number of players from seven to five.  Seven first round matches take place on Saturday and Sunday.  Munster holders Mallow are in action in Monkstown on Sunday, where they will face Mahon.  Kinsale were Munster finalists in 2015 and they will face Douglas on Sunday.  That is without doubt the most interesting match of the first round.  Both clubs were also paired early on in the competition last year and Kinsale won only after the match went to playoff holes.  Kinsale went on to contest the Munster Final while Douglas won the Fred Daly Plate.

South East League Update: East Cork & West Waterford lead

The South East league is underway with 9 clubs taking part in the competition this year.  The competition uses a combination of Bruen and Purcell pairings and is an ideal warm-up for the Cups & Shields competitions later in the year.  West Waterford have topped their section after three rounds, with Youghal taking second place.  Only two rounds have taken place in Section B and East Cork are out in front on 16 points.  Mahon are second with 13 points and Mitchelstown are third on 10 points.  Cobh and Fermoy have played just one match each and will no doubt be hoping to catch the leaders as the competition continues.
