Robbie Walsh claimed his first provincial title today when he overturned a three shot deficit to win the Connacht Boys in Oughterard.  It was a long three days for the Kinsale golfer, he was in contention from the start and held a share of the lead with Galgorm Castle’s Joshua Hill after an opening 68.  He fell back to second place after round two though when he shot a level par 72 and Hill shot a 69.  With a three shot lead, Hill was favourite to win the title, and after the opening nine it still looked like that.  The Kinsale teenager was still three behind at the turn but two mistakes from Hill and a birdie from Walsh on the par five 14th saw the pair tied for the lead on the 16th tee.  Hill went one ahead with a birdie on the 16th, but he closed with two bogies that would put him into second place.  Walsh’s birdie on the par three 17th was crucial, it gave him a one shot lead heading to the 18th tee.  Although both golfers bogied the last, Walsh knew he had a cushion and claimed his first provincial title.

Muskerry’s Fionn Hickey carded a final round 69 (-2) to move up to 4th place, that’s another good result after he won the Under 17 trophy at the Irish Boys last week.  Jack Egan (Muskerry) and Keelan McCarthy (Lee Valley) both finished inside the top twenty, and Ronan Feerick (Mallow) dropped Continue reading

Fionn Hickey (Muskerry) pictured at the Douglas Senior Scratch Cup recently.

Fionn Hickey won another title today, he scooped the Under 17 Trophy at the Irish Boys in New Forest today.  Hickey had a disappointing 78 yesterday, but he bounced back today with a very steady level par round of 72.  A birdie 4th hole saw him turn on one under, but two bogies on the back nine saw him move from the red to +1.  Another birdie on the 16th, followed by two closing pars saw him return to level, on a four round total of 292 (+4).  That was just two shots behind the overall Irish Boys winner, Aaron Marshall from Lisburn.  It was another positive weeks for Fionn, the four rounds of 72, 70, 78, 72 will mean another handicap cut for the Muskerry golfer who is currently playing off scratch.  That’s the second trophy of 2019 for Continue reading

Fionn Hickey

Fionn Hickey finished strongly in Donegal today to claim second place in the Ulster Boys Open Championship.  After opening rounds of 72 & 73 the Muskerry man was -1 and held 4th place overnight.  In tough scoring conditions, Hickey found himself four over after six holes, but two birdies steadied the score.   A final bogey on the 16th would see him sign for a 76, but that ended being the third best score of the day with nobody able to break par.  Dundalk’s Josh Macklin shot a 74 to win while overnight leader Joshua Hill finished fourth.  Robert Walsh(Kinsale) finished tied for 17th while Jack Egan (Muskerry) and Keelan McCarthy (Lee Valley) were further down the field.

Sara Byrne was back in the news last week when she won yet another award.  The Douglas teenager won the Cork City and County Youth Sports Award last week at a reception in the Metropole Hotel.  It was a great award to win, beating the 11 other monthly award winners to scoop the title.  This is the second award for Byrne, who was named the Irish Golf Writers Womens Amateur Golfer of the Year Award in December.  For Sara and her family it was a change to reflect on the successes of the year, although Sara was a bit more clinical in her review of the year when she accepted the award.  “2018 was a bit of a rollercoaster year” said the Douglas and Ireland golfer, “there were plenty of ups and downs and feeling frustrated at times, but the adrenaline rush is unreal when you succeed.  Last year gave me some really hard knocks but some magical moments also.  I’ve advanced my goals hugely, Irish Ladies Champion. Irish Girls Order of Merit winner, getting to +1 handicap and getting to into the top 100 in the WAGR rankings”.

There was more than that for the talented teenager.  She represented Ireland at Continue reading

Super Summer for Sean

Sean Reddy Douglas Minor MatchplayCupSean Reddy is one of Cork’s emerging young golfers who continues to work on his game and improve, and the 2018 season was an important one for the 11 year golf nut.  Having started playing golf many years ago, Sean joined Douglas Golf Club at the start of the season and quickly became a regular on the course.  The young golfer rounded off his season when he got his hands on some important silverware last month, he won the Minor Matchplay Cup in Douglas in September.  Any the way he won was pretty impressive.  Playing in a matchplay competition, he won the 18th with a birdie to force the match onto the 19th hole.  And on the testing par four he won the match with a par.  Sean was a busy boy all Summer, playing competitions and practicing.  Like most young golfers, the summer holidays meant more time on the course and he put himself to good use picking up the club almost every day.  “All summer I played most days in Douglas and then other days I practiced in the Academy in Fota Island” said Sean, “I was usually playing or practicing everyday.  I got to play Hollywood in Belfast, Rory Milroy’s home course, it was incredible to play there.  My favourite also was the K Club, last time I was there on a Sunday was to watch Rory win the Irish Open in 2016.”  Unlike many other golfers of his age, Sean doesn’t just practice for fun, he does it to improve.  And he spent the summer working on a few important areas.  I worked on my swing path and alignment mostly, trying to keep my swing consistent on every shot” explained Reddy,  “I know my swing speed and distance will come as I get older, I am not 12 until next year and I want my swing to be perfect now so when I am older it hopefully will be always be consistent as I swing faster.  I worked on many speed and strength drills with Peter for most of the summer.”  Now playing off an official GUI handicap, Sean has seen this tumble as he played in Douglas over the Summer.  He dropped ten shots and he’s now playing off 14 – a very impressive mark for an eleven year old.  “In February had a handicap of 24” explained Sean, “I am now down to 14 since Continue reading

Deasy Doubles Up – Munster Boys Under 16 Open Winner

Munster Boys Under 16 Amateur Open 2018
Newcastlewest Golf Club
Thursday 21st August 2018Mel Deasy (Bantry Bay) bagged his second Munster title when he won the Munster Boys Under 16 Open at Newcastlewest today.  The Munster Under 15 champion from two weeks ago, Mel was up against a tough field for the Under 16 Open.  Deasy started the second round in a  four-way tie for the lead, and a rain delay meant he started his final round an hour later than scheduled.  A hard south westerly wind tested everyone and Deasy parred the opening hole which proved problematic for many golfers.  A solid front nine followed with birdies on the 4th and 8th holes.  That gave the Ballincollig man a two shot lead over the field as he faced into the final nine holes.  The back nine proved testing, with Deasy dropping shots on the 12th and 15th.  After his playing partner Joshua McCabe fired in two birdies leaving the Bantry golfer two behind.  McCabe found trouble coming home however dropping four shots over the 16th and 17th.  That gave Deasy back his two shot lead, and he played the 18th like a pro.  He found the fairway off the tee and played a steady approach that finished just short of the green on the long par four.  A chip and two putts later he was the Munster Boys Under 16 Champion.  His one over par second round meant that he finished on a level par total of 140 for this two rounds.

Thursday 21st August 2018Joshua McCabe (Roganstown) was second, one shot behind Deasy, and third place went to Robert Galligan (Elm Park).  Kinsale’s Robbie Walsh had a disappointing second round of 81, dropping outside the top ten.  Muskerry’s Stephen Riordan jumped ten places following his second round but Jack Murphy and  Brian McCarthy both dropped places in the testing conditions.  They were the only Cork golfers to make the cut for the second day.

For Deasy it was a great finish to the week.  On Tuesday he was on the Bantry Bay Junior Foursomes team who lost out in the Munster semi-final.  Mel is now a double Munster winner, holding the U15 and U16 titles.
