The Cork Scratch Cup

2016 Winner Cathal Butler
Most people will know that last weekend’s competition was the Munster Strokeplay, but not everyone will know that when the event was given Championship status it had the additional designation of “incorporating the Cork Scratch Cup”. The Cork Scratch Cup is one of the oldest trophies in Irish golf and according to Cork’s GM Matt Sands, it the original cup that was awarded over 90 years ago. The cup and base holds the names of the all of the winners.
The trophy was presented by William Dwyer, the same person who started the inter-society competition which still runs today. Dwyer presented the trophy in 1923 and won it in himself in 1924. The trophy bears the names of the great Cork Golf Club stalwarts, Crosbie, Simcox, Bruen and Higgins are all represented, with Jimmy Bruen claiming four consecutive titles from 1938-1941. There was a gap of four years during the war and Redmond Simcox won his fourth title in 1947 when the competition resumed. Simcox was one of three golfers Continue reading
Anderson claims 2nd Munster Strokeplay title
Barry Anderson followed up his recent win the West of Ireland by claiming the Munster Strokeplay Championship in Cork Golf Club today. Rounds of 70 & 72 saw Anderson edge out Peter O’Keeffe and Ronan Mullarney but one shot. The 2014 champion won the West two weeks ago and followed up with another win today in tough conditions in Cork. Anderson shot a two under par 70 this morning and needed to get up and down from the fringe on the 18th to sign for a 72. Anderson was battling with Peter O’Keeffe, the Douglas golfer found a fairway bunker on 18, and a bad lie meant he couldn’t go for the green. He had a 35 foot putt for par but missed, meaning Anderson won by a single stroke. Ronan Mullarney had two rounds of 71 today and finished tied for second place with O’Keeffe. Mullarney also won the Carr Bruen trophy as the best Under 25. Continue reading

75th William Dwyer Trophy, Inter-Society Competition
Entries are now open for the 75th consecutive staging of William Dwyer inter-society competition. Two qualifiers will take place in June with Cork Golf Club hosting the final in early July. Any society can enter and the format is foursomes with teams of eight taking part. Four teams will qualify from each day in Mahon.
Qualifiers:
Wednesday 7th June at Mahon Golf Club
Tuesday 13th June at Mahon Golf Club
Anyone interested in playing in the event should contact Finbarr O’Callaghan (finbarrocallaghan@eircom.net) and full rules and details are available from Finbarr who has managed the competition for the last number of years.
The William Dwyer Trophy is a living history of commercial Cork. The trophy boasts 73 separate silver plates detailing the winning team and players from every year since 1943. Originally there were eight team members (4 foursomes pairs) but this was later increased to ten. Around six years ago the number was again reduced to the original eight, reflecting the smaller number of golfers playing with societies. In all there are around 700 names on the trophy. Indeed the trophy is well over Continue reading
Walsh wins in Cork, Munster Senior Championships
Doneraile’s Paula Walsh won the Munster Senior Open Championship in Cork today, and her three under par display meant that she was a wire to wire winner over the three rounds. Paula went into the final round with a three shot lead, and her four birdies and single bogey saw her extend her grip on the tournament to win by six strokes. The Doneraile golfer is also a member of Cork and she used her knowledge of the Little Island course as she dominated the event. Two early birdies on the first and second would have settled her as she continued with a very steady game to maintain and extend her lead. It’s two in a row for North Cork, last years winner in Waterville was Valerie Clancy from Mitchelstown. Second place went to Sara Byrne from Douglas who was one of only three players to break par on the final day. It was a great finish for Byrne who opened with a disappointing 80 in the first round. A second round 75 saw her jump up to 6th place and the one under par 73 today saw the Douglas golfer finish in second place overall.

Sara had a dream start, with three straight birdies from the first hole. Two more birdies followed on the back nine and she played a very tidy game with just four bogies on the card. Byrne also won the De Courcey Trophy and Continue reading

Bumper entry for Munster Strokeplay

2014 Winner Barry Anderson
A top class field has entered for the Munster Strokeplay which takes place at the end of this month and the cut looks like falling again from the 2016 mark of 0.5. Entries for the showpiece Cork Golf Club event closed last night and there were no less that seven late entries that should qualify, four of those playing from plus handicaps. Although all handicaps will need to be verified, it’s looking like the cut will fall at 0.3, with not all of those playing from this mark getting in on the first cut.
Tiernan McLarnon was one of the late entrants and he leads the handicaps, playing from +3.6. There are over fifty golfers playing from plus handicaps including 24 who Continue reading
Munster Strokeplay closing date approaching

2016 winner Cathal Butler (Kinsale) Picture: Niall O’Shea

Holder Cathal Butler (Kinsale) won the event last year after an exciting play-off win over Cork’s Gary O’Flaherty. Butler has already entered, as has Kinsale’s John Murphy who won the Munster Student’s Championship in Cork GC this week. This year the Munster Strokeplay is a counting event for the GUI Order of Merit (Willie Gill Award) and that should be an added incentive for golfers to travel to Cork for the May Bank Holiday weekend. The event has been a WAGR counting event for several years, and it also counts towards the Munster Senior Order of Merit. Last year there were over 50 golfers playing off scratch or better, and the indications are that a similar standard will be seen when the event gets underway on Saturday 29th April. Peter O’Keeffe (+2.9), Ian O’Rourke (+2.6), Mark Power (+2.5) and James Sugrue (+2) head the entrants at present. A total of 78 golfer will compete in the opening 36 holes, with the top 39 (plus ties) going forward for the second 36 holes on Sunday 30th April.
