Cork Scratch Cup
Cork set for Munster Strokeplay
Alan Fahy returns to Cork this weekend to defend his Munster Strokeplay title. Cork Golf Club will play host to the 72 hole event on Saturday and Sunday, and although some of the Irish Team are in Lytham, the field is the deepest ever with the cut falling at +0.4. The marquee three ball tees off at 9.40, it contains the champion Fahy, the 2018 runner up Robbie Cannon and Portmarnock’s Geoff Lenehan. The three have all shown promise this year and will be hoping for a positive start in Cork on Saturday. Keith Egan from Carton House is the lowest handicapped golfer in the field, playing off an impressive mark of +3.0. Gary O’Flaherty, Ian O’Rourke and Ian O’Flynn are the leading contenders from the home club while Kanturk native Paul Buckley has recently joined the club and will be hoping to build on good form from last weekend in Lee Valley.

Closing Date for Strokeplay approaching

The closing date for the Munster Strokeplay is fast approaching, with entries closing on Saturday evening. The 72 hole event takes place over two days on the May Bank Holiday weekend, with the winner picking up the famous Cork Scratch Cup. Although the event has been a Munster Championship for over a decade, the cup dates back to 1923 making it the oldest scratch cup in the country. Already a number of the top Irish amateurs have entered and more will follow over the coming days. Entries are limited to the lowest 75 golfers, with the top 39 golfers qualifying for the final two rounds. The championship is again sponsored by Liam Ryan from Ryan’s SuperValu. The Famous Cork Scratch Cup

Many people will know that this weekend’s competition is called the Munster Strokeplay, but not everyone will know that when the event was given Championship status it had the additional designation of “incorporating the Cork Scratch Cup”. The Cork Scratch Cup is one of the oldest trophies in Irish golf and according to Cork’s GM Matt Sands, it the original cup that was awarded over 90 years ago. The cup dates from 1923 and it holds the names of the all of the winners.
The trophy was presented by William Dwyer, a man and a family that are synonymous with Cork Golf Club, and the same person who started the inter-society competition which still runs today. Dwyer presented the trophy in 1923 and won it in himself in 1924. The trophy bears the names of the great Cork Golf Club stalwarts, Crosbie, Simcox, Bruen and Higgins are all represented, with Jimmy Bruen claiming four consecutive titles from 1938-1941.
