Ireland had a super win against hosts Denmark in semi-final of the European Seniors today. In a match that went all the way to the wire Ireland ended up on the right side of the result after one additional hole. Alan Condren won with a few to spare and Steven Graham won on the 18th. Karl Bornemann & Jim Carvill lost their foursomes match on the 17th, and Peter Sheehan also lost his singles match. With four matches in the score was 2-2, meaning O’Brien’s match would decide the outcome. The Castlemartyr member was one down after 15, and despite winning the 16th the momentum shifted when he lost 17 to a birdie. With the pressure of the match on him, O’Brien birdied the last to extend the match. On the 19th, he calmly slotted a ten foot putt to send Ireland through to tomorrow’s final. It’s been a great week for O’Brien on his international debut, and his form has been matched by his teammates who also have been very solid all week. Ireland now face England tomorrow in the final.

Douglas Golf Club recently celebrated the successes of three of their members, all three were capped for Ireland this year. Sara Byrne, Karl Bornemann and Peter O’Keeffe were the centre of attention on the evening when members, families and friends gathered at the club. As well as receiving presentation from the club, the trio were also granted honorary membership from the club with Management Committee Chairman Jerry Cronin presenting certificates to all three. It was a great year for all three golfers. In addition to being selected for Ireland Girls, Sara Byrne was also selected for the GB&I team that played in the Junior Vagliano trophy in Italy early in the season. She also 
Karl Bornemann was today named in the Irish Seniors team that will take part in the European Seniors Championship next month. Bornemann, who is also Captain of Douglas Golf Club this year has been on the selectors radar for two years, and his selection is a result of some solid performances over that time. This year he was 6th in the Irish Seniors Close in Malone and he recorded a top ten finish in the European Seniors Individual Championship in Austria in June. Last year he took third place in the same event. Bornemann previously missed out on an Irish cap although he was named as a non travelling reserve for one Irish squad. The team which will be managed by Mahon’s Sean O’Leary has three changes to the 2016 team, Bornemann is joined by Eamon Haugh (Castletroy) and John Mitchell (Tramore), with Cork’s Tom Cleary one of the three that missed out.
Karl Bornemann had a very good final round in the European Seniors in Spain today and claimed a spot in the top ten at the Golfclub Schloss Schönborn in Austria. The tree-lined parkland course proved a tough challenge for the elite amateurs, there were just five sub par rounds over the three days. Windy conditions also added to the challenge on the par 73 course. The Douglas man opened with a 77 on Thursday and finished in the top 30. He followed with two round of 75 which saw him over into the top ten after 54 holes. Bornemann took third place in the event last year and was happy with his performance considering that he admitted that he didn’t have his A game. “It demanded precision and afforded few opportunities” said Karl. “There was lots of slope and grain on the greens so made it tough to convert the opportunities that did come. If you pushed too hard, disaster awaited.” Karl has had a busy year, he’s Captain in Douglas this year which has limited the amount of competitive golf that he can play so a top ten finish is a very positive reminder that he can challenge at the top level. It’s also a timely boost as the AIG Senior Cup and Barton Shield qualifiers approach. Mallow host the Senior Cup while Macroom is the venue for the Barton Shield in three weeks time.
