Castletroy set for TEG Senior Scratch Cup

Castletroy Golf Club has announced details of the 2023 Senior Scratch Cup, kindly sponsored by Trade Electric Group.  The competition takes place on Saturday, 2nd September.

First competed for in 1948, the Castletroy Senior Scratch Cup (the Major HK Murray trophy) is one of the oldest and most prestigious scratch cups in the country and attracts many of Ireland’s best amateur golfers each year.  The course, currently ranked in the top 100 in Ireland and measuring almost 7,000 yards off the back tees, consistently offers a stiff challenge to any player on the senior scratch cup or championship circuit.

Entries open for 2023 Bruen Youths

Muskerry will hold the annual Bruen Youths Trophy on Monday next 21st August, and there will be plenty of golfers hoping to add their name to the list of famous winners.  The competition provides young golfers with one of very few opportunities to play medal golf over 36 holes.

The event started started to mark the 50th anniversary of Jimmy Bruen’s famous win in the British Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale.  The cup itself has its own legacy, it was won by Jimmy Bruen himself in 1944 when it was presented to him when he won the Muskerry Captain’s Prize.  The Bruen family donated the cup to Muskerry in 1986 when the club wanted to honour the 50th anniversary of Bruen’s win in the British Boys at Royal Birkdale.  While Bruen is also Continue reading →

Cork Women win second Pennant, Bruen in Cobh, Mullingar Round Up

ProShop Challenge raises €30k

Kinsale’s Pro Shop Challenge takes place today, and the even has raised almost €30,000 for two Cork charities.  A large crowd is expected in Kinsale this afternoon for the skins match that will see John Murphy and Rory Best take on Kinsale PGA Professionals Ger Broderick and Ian Stafford.

ARC House and Breakthrough Cancer Research are the beneficiaries of this years event and organiser Ian Stafford is thrilled with the response so far.  “We absolutely delighted with the total of €28,000 so far.  Our initial hopes going into this was that we could match what me made from the previous four events which was around €15,000 so to nearly double Continue reading →

O’Keeffe goes close again at the South

Peter O’Keeffe tees off the 17th in Lahinch

Peter O’Keeffe had another narrow loss at the South of Ireland, finishing as runner-up after five days of golf in Lahinch.  O’Keeffe agonisingly lost out on the 18th green, just one step away from claiming his first provincial championship.  The three time Irish champion was a semi-finalist in 2021, a finalist in 2022 and reached the final again last Sunday.  Despite leading for most of the final on Sunday, he was drawn back to level by Colm Campbell on the 17th, with the Warrenpoint man winning on the final hole after five today days of championship golf.

Ten Cork golfers advance at the South

Cork golfers had some impressive performances at the South of Ireland last week with ten golfers making the cut.  Dean O’Riordan, Joe O’Neill and Robert Walsh all made it through on the cut mark of +6 while Mel Deasy was one better on +5.

Peter O’Keeffe was just one off the leading qualifier on -5 and Morgan Cain was the only other Cork player under par on -2.  Former South Champion Sean Desmond went safely through on +1 with James Walsh continuing his good run of form to finish in the top 20.  Munster Strokeplay winner Jason Law also made Continue reading →

Douglas and Monkstown win Munster East Titles
