Butler & Sugrue bow out in Irish Close, Egan & Costello make the cut in Irish Boys U16

Jack Egan (Muskerry)
Cathal Butler and James Sugrue both lost out in the first matchplay round at the AIG Irish Close Championship in Galway yesterday. They were the only two Cork golfers to make it into the top 64 after the 36 hole strokeplay qualifier. Butler was up against West of Ireland winner Barry Anderson and the Kinsale man was one up after 14, but Anderson won three holes on the trot to close the match on the 17th. Sugrue brought his match to the 18th, but crucially couldn’t win the final hole and lost by one hole to Portmarnock’s James Fox.
Muskerry’s Jack Egan made the cut for the final round at the Irish Boys Under 16 Open in Rockmount. Egan was going around nicely today until he found trouble on the 17th and had to sign for an 80. Still he ended up two inside the cut mark, just inside the top 25. Kinsale’s Jody Costello shot rounds of Continue reading
Bornemann named in Irish Seniors Team
Karl Bornemann was today named in the Irish Seniors team that will take part in the European Seniors Championship next month. Bornemann, who is also Captain of Douglas Golf Club this year has been on the selectors radar for two years, and his selection is a result of some solid performances over that time. This year he was 6th in the Irish Seniors Close in Malone and he recorded a top ten finish in the European Seniors Individual Championship in Austria in June. Last year he took third place in the same event. Bornemann previously missed out on an Irish cap although he was named as a non travelling reserve for one Irish squad. The team which will be managed by Mahon’s Sean O’Leary has three changes to the 2016 team, Bornemann is joined by Eamon Haugh (Castletroy) and John Mitchell (Tramore), with Cork’s Tom Cleary one of the three that missed out.
The team will be taking part in the European Seniors Team Championship which takes place from 5-9 September at PGA Sweden National.

Cathal Butler and James Sugrue will tee it up this morning in the matchplay stage of the AIG Irish Close in Galway. Butler carded two rounds of 73 to get through in the middle of the qualifiers (top 64), and James Sugrue battled tonsillitis to shoot a great 72 yesterday to finish one shot behind Bulter on +7. Mark Healy and Kieran Lynch were unlucky, they both missed to cut by one shot. John Hickey recovered from a disastrous opening day to shoot a one under par 69 on the second day, but that wasn’t enough to get him into the top 64. There was also disappointment for Shane Kenneally, Sean Desmond, Conor Dowling and Darragh O’Connor but all will have gained valuable experience at the elite level of Irish amateur golf. The leading qualifier was Peter Kerr from Royal Portrush after he shot two rounds of 69.
The matchplay commences this morning, Butler faces West of Ireland and Munster Strokeply winner Barry Anderson. Sugrue will be up against James Fox Continue reading

Super 67 for Sara Byrne

Sara Byrne pictured during the Irish Girls Close, picture: Pat Cashman
Sara Byrne shot a career low round of 67 in Douglas on Sunday, and won the Girlie Hegarty Trophy in the process. Six birdies and just one bogey saw Byrne finish well ahead of the field. The sharp shooter was on form, helped by the fact that Douglas is her home course. Sara finished four shots clear of the field with her 65 nett, Aoife Ni Thuama won the best gross with a 73. Bandon’s Sarah Higgins won the 18 hole stableford competition while Aoife Keating (Douglas) won the nine hole competition. It’s been a solid year for the Sara Byrne. The teenager has had a very busy summer and her five under par round was yet another milestone in a year that saw several improvements. Byrne was in action Girls Home Internationals recently, where Ireland narrowly lost out to England, and prior to that she was representing Great Britain and Ireland in Italy at the Junior Vagliano Trophy.

O’Flaherty misses out as Murray claims fifth Munster Mid-Am title
Two putts that were left hanging on the lip cost Gary O’Flaherty dearly as he missed out on a play-off in the Munster Mid Am. The Cork golfer had a mixed day but gave himself a few chances. Despite carding two early birdies, O’Flaherty lost a ball on the 7th to go back to level, but he stuck with it on a difficult day for golf. There was a huge downpour in Newcastlewest as O’Flaherty finished his round. Members worked had to clear the standing water on the final three greens meaning that play could continue, and O’Flaherty saw birdie putts finish right on lip on both 16 and 17. A birdie on either hole would have been enough to get him into a play-off but he had to settle for third place. O’Flaherty had a to sit back and watch his friend and Continue reading

Castlemartyr Juveniles Driving Ahead
It takes a lot to get a club off the ground and when you’re looking at starting a junior golf section that can be even more daunting. Castlemartyr has changed quite a bit in the past three years, in addition to almost doubling the men’s membership numbers, the resort has also started a ladies club and a juvenile section. The junior section started three years ago when the very first junior golfers were family members of existing adult club members and grew from there. In 2016 the section was given some added firepower, when past captain John Paul Twomey took on the role of Juvenile Officer. Twomey had spent a few years on Committee and recognised the importance and the value of building a strong and active junior golf section. “In 2016 I took on the role as Juvenile Officer along with Club Vice President” explained Twomey. “From my time being Club Captain in 2014 I always had an aspiration in taking on the role and expanding the club and offer more to a juvenile club. We commenced by implementing & introducing a code of conduct and policy document safeguarding children in sport in accordance with the CGI guidelines. This was a major stepping stone to getting the juvenile club up and running. All club members involved with juveniles are also Garda vetted in accordance with the G.U.I.” Things have moved on from that first year, the club had around 10 junior members and played in the Fred Daly Trophy in 2014 for the first time. Now with Continue reading
