Mahon Golf Club won the Harbour Shield last week after a hard fought win over East Cork. Monkstown was the venue for the final, with only two teams remaining from the summer long junior golf competition that saw ten clubs compete over three months. Monkstown was in great condition on Sunday and although it was breezy it stayed dry for the afternoon. This is Mahon’s second time to win the competition, having won the inaugural in 2009. The competition has grown from the initial five clubs taking part, and there are now three inter-club junior golf competitions available to Cork clubs. Continue reading
Connolly wins in East Cork
East Cork held their annual Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday and the winner was David Connolly from the home club. The popular winner went around in level par 69 to win the title by a single stroke. The winner started poorly and turned on three over, but birdies on 10, 11, 16 and 17 put him back in the hunt. An all-important par putt on the last was enough to give Connolly a one shot lead and the title. David is also the course record holder in East Cork having shot a seven under par 62 back in 2007. Kinsale’s Cathal Butler was second with a 70 and Cork’s Sean McSweeney also shot 70 for third place. Doneraile’s John Hickey was fourth with a 72. Continue reading
No Cork Success on PGA Scene
There was no joy for Cork’s PGA professionals in Adare Manor GC last week as the tour drew to a close. Shanahan Retains Title in Castlemartyr
Mark Shanahan retained his Castlemartyr Senior Scratch Cup title last weekend when he shot a winning seven under par around the inland links course. The event was celebrating its fifth staging and Shanahan is making the event his own as it was his third time winning the end of season event. Many consider Shanahan unlucky to miss out on selection for the Munster team but the end of season win will mark an end to a good season. He won the opening scratch cup of the year in Fota in March. The 6,790 yard blue course in Castlemartyr was in great condition and the fair set up allowed Munster’s top golfers to go for it with six golfers shooting in the 60’s. Oakley continued their strong association with amateur golf in Cork with an array of top quality prizes on offer. Continue reading
