Kinsale Golf Club booked their place in the Pierce Purcell Munster finals last week with a dramatic play-off win over Cobh.  The area final took place at Lee Valley which was in great condition for the South Munster decider.   Kinsale had qualified from the qualifier that they hosted and Cobh came through in the Fermoy venue qualifier.  Kinsale’s Bernard O’Keeffe and Diarmuid O’Brien put an early point on the board when they won their match 7/5, beating Cobh’s Donal Feen and Adam Geaney who obviously had an off day.  The only other match of the day to finish in regulation was the final match.  Cobh were dormie four but didn’t close out the match until the 18th, and the match was level a one point each.  Continue reading →

Irish Junior Foursomes (Round 1)

The strokeplay qualifiers for the Irish Junior Foursomes took place over the weekend with four Cork clubs hosting.  The top two teams from each venue qualified for the next stage.

Qualifying Section @ Ballybunion GC 4.4.15  :: Qualifiers – Ballybunion & Dooks
Qualifying Section @ Ennis GC 4.4.15  :: Qualifiers – Shannon & Lahinch
Qualifying Section @ Clonmel GC 5.4.15 :: Qualifiers – Clonmel & Tipperary
Qualifying Section @ Gold Coast GC 6.4.15 :: Qualifiers – Tramore & Gold Coast

Qualifiers from each venue will play off against each other before the quarter-final draw is announced.  Dates & venues to be decided by the Munster Branch GUI.

East Cork beak Cobh hearts

East Cork broke Cobh hearts again last weekend as they progressed from the Pierce Purcell qualifiers at Mahon.  On Saturday they accounted for hosts Mahon and on Sunday morning they beat Monkstown.  On the other side of the draw Cobh beat Castlemartyr, Fermoy and Mallow to advance to the venue final.  It was the same match up as the Bruen qualifier two weeks ago but Cobh started brightly and held the advantage through most of the afternoon. Lisselan and East Cork through to Bruen Final

Cobh and Kinsale played host to the Jimmy Bruen Shield area matches over the weekend as the AIG Cups and Shields got underway.  The wind blew hard on Saturday and the elevated nature of both courses tested all players.  The conditions were not ideal but it provided all teams with a requirement to think their way around the course.  Although conditions were a bit better on Sunday, the weather helped to set the scene for classic matchplay, whoever made the least errors would progress.
