Douglas and Monkstown win Munster East Titles

They had to travel outside Cork to win, but Douglas and Monkstown both tasted success in boys inter-club events recently.  Douglas travelled to Waterford on Saturday to play Faithlegg at home in the Munster East final of the Fred Daly Trophy.  Playing the hosts was going to be a tough assignment but with a full panel available, Douglas would have been confident when heading East.  They had Continue reading

Pennant wins for Clonakilty, Douglas and Fota Island

Clonakilty, Douglas and Fota Island all claimed Munster East pennants over the weekend as more of the Golf Ireland Inter-Club finals took place.  Fermoy was the venue for five finals over the weekend, and the north Cork course was in great condition for the event.  Fermoy has been held in high regard as a finals venue for many years and they club delivered a great experience yet again for the travelling teams and supporters.  Occasional showers over the two days challenged the golfers and the spectators but the course held up and as usual the greens provided a tough but fair test for everyone.   Clonakilty made it two wins for Cork clubs when they defeated Slievenamon in the AIG Challenge Cup.

Fota Island made it two wins in two weekends when the Women’s Junior Foursomes team defeated Youghal.  Paula Whitley and Suzanne Hickey put the first point on the board for Fota Island and the title was secured when Marissa O’Flynn and Theresa Roche won the final match.

Hopes of a second pennant for Fota Island were dashed with a dramatic 19th hole finish in the Flogas Irish Mixed Foursomes.  With the match balanced 2-2 the large crowd of spectators made their way to the first hole.  Their opponents, Co Tipperary Continue reading

Cope Alliance launch 46th season

One of Cork’s most impressive golfing groups have finalised plans for their 2023 season.  The Cope Golf Alliance is now in it’s 46th year and the group plan to have another busy year where as well as plenty of golf, they’ll also continue to raise funds for Cope Foundation.  Since the late 1970’s the alliance has raised  over €1.7million and this year they expect to add over €40,000 to that total.

Mens Captain James Doolan is looking forward to the season, his 20th year as a member.  “Everyone involved with the Cope Golf Alliance is looking forward to the 2023 season, which kicks off for the Ladies on April 3rd at Cork G.C., and on April 24th for the Men, at Monkstown.  The Alliance members are drawn from Cork, Douglas, Monkstown and Muskerry Golf Clubs.  Because the four clubs give their courses free of charge for Alliance competitions, the entire amount collected from members (€75 each), goes to the COPE Foundation.  We also have generous, long-standing sponsors who take care of the prizes for each outing, and at our recent AGM, we presented a cheque for €43,500 to the Cope Foundation.” Continue reading

Murphy wins Munster Boys in Fermoy

Jack Murphy claimed his third win of 2022 when he put on an impressive display in Fermoy last week.  The 16-year-old Douglas member won the Munster boys Under 18 Open Championship, adding his name to a prestigious list of winners going back over 50 years. Murphy had already secured the Leinster Boys Under 16 and Munster Boys Under 16 titles earlier in the season, and he led from the start in Fermoy when he was the only player under par after the opening round.  He increased his lead after a second round 68.  At that stage it was unlikely that he would be caught but he still needed a solid final Continue reading

Douglas Golf Club’s General Manager John McHenry said the announcement is a proud day for the club.  “We would like to thank Continue reading
