The golf season is finally getting underway and last week Lee Valley launched their showpiece Senior Scratch Cup which takes place next month. The 54 hole tournament is the only club event in Cork that attracts WAGR world ranking points and should again attract some of Ireland’s top amateurs. The competition takes place on the 22/23 April and just a week after the West of Ireland unofficially opens the 2017 season. Tournament Director Vincent Drinan has been involved since the inaugural 54 hole event in 2009 and he’s already busy taking entries. “We are really looking forward to another great event this year” said Drinan. “Entries are now open and anyone interested in playing should contact me directly. Last year we used a later date in April and this worked very well, and the course should be in excellent condition for the event. Warrenpoint’s Colm Campbell carded his third consecutive 71 to win the EMC Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup this afternoon. Campbell was the only player to have three scores in the red and his form will no doubt be a boost to his season ahead. Colm Campbell shot a second consecutive one under par 71 to jump from 6th to 1st after the second round of the EMC Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup. Campbell was two over after 10 holes this afternoon but an eagle 3 on the 11th hole brought him back into the fray, and a birdie on the 15th saw him move into the red figures. Andrew McCormack is tied for the lead on two under, he added a level par 72 to his 70 from this morning to stay in pole position.
Colin Woodroofe leads the EMC Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup after the first round. The Blainroe member shot a three under par 69 in near perfect conditions at Lee Valley. Woodroofe was one over after two holes, he bogeyed the short par four first hole. He bounced back however with a birdie on the third. Back to back birdies on the 7th and 8th also helped him to top the leaderboard after 18.
