Cork & Douglas set for Fred Daly Final
By Niall O’Shea
Douglas and Cork both came through their Fred Daly semi-final matches to book their places in the area final which take place next week. Cork were in action in Castlemartyr on Tuesday and they faced Monkstown. Rory Dineen and Leon Foley featured on the Cork Junior Cup team last week and both won their matches this week. Other wins were recorded by Cian O’Regan and Robin Reidy and Michael O’Connell, Jack O’Flynn and Liam Doyle were the other three players. Monkstown got two early points on the board thanks to Shane Livesey Sean Desmond. Nick Moore, Mark Elliott, Ciaran Geary, Adrian Twomey and James Maher also featured for Monkstown.
In Fermoy holders Mallow faced Douglas in the second semi-final. Mallow have been very successful at this grade and although they missed out on a national title last year they did win the JTG Home Nations competition in Spain in April. On this occasion however Douglas got the better of the north Cork side. The Douglas side was comprised of David O’Sullivan, Adam McSweeeny, Pearse Dorney, Barry O’Sullivan Geaney, Darren Hourihan, Darragh Lonergan and John Boylan.
Youghal’s Conor Coyne shot an impressive 69 on the Valley course in Royal Portrush during the North of Ireland. Unfortunately for Conor he shot an 87 on the Dunluce course and missed the cut. Skibbereen’s Kieran Lynch recorded the same scores but in the opposite order highlighting the difficulty of the former Irish Open venue.
