Easter always see’s the staging of the Ford Muskerry Junior Scratch Trophy, a unique event for golfers with a handicap of 5-11. Two qualifying days sees the top 64 golfers go through to a matchplay phase player over Easter. 19 year old Adam McSweeney from Douglas added his name to the Ford Junior Scratch Trophy after three tough days. Although he was three down after just eight holes in the final, the Junior Cup and Senior Cup golfer fought back to level the match. Cork Winter Golf Alliance

Unfortunately the Alliance outing planned for November is not going ahead.  Bookings for the event were too low to proceed.  Apologies to those people who booked and paid, refunds will go out tomorrow morning so please allow 1-3 days for it to appear in your PayPal account.

Many thanks to those who did book in and to those who paid, and thanks to Brady and Alan in Castlemartyr who were very helpful in organising the competition.

Spillane wins Doneraile Senior Scratch Cup

Mallow’s Ian Spillane won the Doneraile Senior Scratch Cup.  He posted a winning 65 to win by one shot from Tim O’Mahony and Pat Murray.

Griffin wins Castlemartyr Senior Scratch Cup

Waterford’s Eanna Griffin shot two under par rounds to win the Castlemartyr Senior Scratch Cup on Sunday.  The Waterford golfer has come close to winning a few times this year, he was runner up at the West of Ireland and led the Munster Strokeplay at the halfway stage, but his first win of 2015 finally came on Sunday.  Griffin was the only golfer to break 70 in the opening round, his 96 had him two shots clear of the Cork GC duo of John Hickey and Paul Tobin.  Continue reading →

The final senior scratch cup of the year takes place in Castlemartyr this weekend and a top quality field will challenge for the large prize fund on offer.  A full field of 66 golfers will take on the 6,790 yard Ron Kirby designed ‘inland links’ course.  Holder by Mark Shanahan leads the handicaps, he’s currently playing off +2.3.  Shanahan is joined by John O’Brien, Kenny McGarry and Kieran McCarthy as the home club’s representatives.  2014 runner up Shane McGlynn (Carton House) leads the challenge from outside Cork.  He’s joined by Sean Barry, Billy McGarry, Geoff Linehan, Mark Somers and Ian Spillane, all six golfers are playing off a mark of +2.  The young players include James Sugrue, Paul Tobin, Sean Desmond, Cillian Moloney, Rory Dineen and Tramore’s Continue reading →

Challenging Opening Day at South of Ireland.

Cork’s interest in the South of Ireland Championship could be dramatically reduced tomorrow after a tough day of scoring for much of the field.  Mallow’s Paul McCarthy is the low Cork player, he shot a round of two over par for a share of 23rd place.  Cork’s Gary O’Flaherty is the only other Cork player inside the matchplay cut mark of 64, he’s +4 in 53rd place.

The CSS of 76 was a good indication of the difficulties faced by golfers on the famous Lahinch links during the opening day of play.  Several golfers recorded scores in the mid and high 80’s with two scores in the 90’s returned.

The second strokeplay round takes place tomorrow, with the top 64 going on to the matchplay stage.
