Cork’s Young Guns lost out in the second round of the South of Ireland Championship in Lahinch today.
Youghal’s Conor Coyne took Niall Gorey to the 18th this afternoon but the experienced campaigner beat Coyne on the final hole. Coyne had an impressive 3&2 win over Warrrenpoint’s Colm Campbell, who finished the strokeplay stage 11 shots ahead of Coyne.
Mallow’s Paul McCarthy started well this morning, he had a 4&3 win over Tramore’s Declan King in the first round match. In the second round McCarthy face in-form Eanna Griffin. The Waterford golfer was runner-up in the West of Ireland earlier this year and he saw off McCarthy’s challenge with a 5&4 win.
Cork’s Gary O’Flaherty kept his challenge alive with a morning win on the 18th against Lahinch’s Declan McInerney. This afternoon he need one extra hole to beat Daniel Brennan (Shannon). Muskerry’s Shane Whooley went out this mornign at the hands of leading qualifier Paul McBride. 2012 winner Pat Murray (Limerick) is also in the hunt having beaten Jonathan Breen and Michael Reid today.
Round three gets underway tomorrow morning with the 16 remaining competitors starting out from 8am. With a second round scheduled again tomorrow, only four will be left by tomorrow evening. The final two rounds are scheduled for Sunday.
