Sara Byrne finished in 3rd place after the final round of the Munster Senior Open Championship in Killarney. It was a positive start for the Douglas member, she shot rounds of 74,75 and 78 to finish on +5. While Byrne took third overall, she just missed out on retaining her Munster Girls title, she was beaten by Aine Donegan who finished second overall. Meadhbh Doyle from Portarlington was the run away winner, she had a winning margin of ten shots closing with another under par round today.
Claire Coughlan Ryan (Cork) finished in 5th place and Clodagh Coughlan (Douglas) was also tied for 5th on +11. Muskerry’s Jean O’Driscoll was just outside the top ten while Michelle Tobin (Cork) finished inside the top 25. Aoife Ni Thuama, Carmel Kearney and Jennifer Hickey all made the 36 hole cut but finished down the field on the final day.

Munster named strong sides for the upcoming interprovincials which will take place in Slieve Russell next month. Doneraile’s Paul Walsh is the only Cork golfer to make the Ladies team and it’s a fair reward for several strong performances over the early season. Walsh was part of the Cork GC team that won the Munster Senior Cup title in Douglas recently.
There were three local golfers selected to play on the Munster Girls team. Grave McGrath (East Cork), Ciara Leonard (Mitchelstown) and Sarah Byrne (Douglas) were all selected to play under the experienced eye of Jennifer Hickey who will captain the side.

Valerie Clancy from Mitchelstown won the ILGU Munster Senior Open in Waterville today after poor weather forced the cancellation of the final round. Clancy led the field by five strokes after the first two rounds. She had played seven holes today before organisers were forced to halt the third round as high winds made the course unplayable. The Killarney member shot the low round of the day yesterday (74) to maintain her lead from the first round.
