Valerie Clancy from Mitchelstown won the ILGU Munster Senior Open in Waterville today after poor weather forced the cancellation of the final round. Clancy led the field by five strokes after the first two rounds. She had played seven holes today before organisers were forced to halt the third round as high winds made the course unplayable. The Killarney member shot the low round of the day yesterday (74) to maintain her lead from the first round. She was the only golfer to break 80 on Wednesday as she recorded a 77 in very testing conditions at the West Kerry links.
Clancy started her second round with a double bogey but birdied the testing second hole. One further bogey and birdie followed but she parred her way home from the 9th in an amazing display of consistent golf. The 15 year old also captured the Girls trophy following the great display of golf. Playing out of Killarney, Valerie is coached by North Cork based PGA Level 3 Professional Michael Collins who is currently coaching a large number of top class players.
Douglas trio Clodagh Coughlan, Sara Byrne and Aoife ni Thuama all finished just inside the top 20 and Rachel Thompson (Cork), Jennifer Hickey (Mallow) and Mary Dowling (Mallow) all finished in the top 30.
