The final of Fota’s first inter-company challenge took place last week with Ballincollig’s VM Ware becoming the first winner. The competition ran over two months, with teams of eight playing in singles format. The best five scores from each team counted with the top four teams qualifying for the final. The winning team was comprised of Wade Lynch, Donagh O’Mahony, Cillian Hurley, Kieran Hallihan, Aidan Lennon, Paul O’Connell, Trevor Harty and Denis O’Neill. The winning team received a golf outing in Fota Island for 20 people including dinner. As well as that they become the first name on a newly commissioned trophy. Scoring in the day was very close, only six points separated all four teams with a countback deciding the eventual winner. VM Ware got the nod on the countback over Stryker after both finished with 165 points. PJ Hegarty & Sons were third with 162 points and BASF were fourth with 159 points.
Conditions were tough for the final with 36 points being the highest score on the day. Stryker’s David O’Keeffe playing out of Kinsale and Cobh’s Gerry Holland representing BASF bother returned 36. Fota’s Seamus Leahy was happy with the new format as he explained: “We were delighted with this new event, with well over thirty local companies taking part. We hope to make it an annual event to allow work colleagues play golf together. The feedback was great, the participants enjoyed the flexible nature of the competition and it allowed them to play when it suited their work schedules. It would appear that we have developed a winning formula to take forward. Any companies wishing to register their interest for next year should contact us.” Fota’s Christmas Hamper Week runs from Monday 17th through to Friday 21st on the Deerpark Course. The format is singles stableford with a competition fee of €40 per golfer. The Winter Open Singles also runs every Wednesday on the Deerpark Course. There are two seniors event coming up before the end of the year, the popular monthly four man seniors team event takes place on Monday next and again on Monday 8th December.
Munster’s PGA Professionals got their winter series underway in Adare this week as the first round of the Premium Golf Brands sponsored series took place on Monday. The event saw over 30 golfers compete in what has become a very popular and competitive series which runs from November through to March. Adare Golf Club was in great condition as usual, however poor weather limited the competition to 15 holes. Callaway Golf were sponsors of the event and the top prize was shared between John McHenry and Danny Sugrue. Both went around the shortened course in 58 strokes, two clear of the field. Davey Barry, Cormac Flannery and Duncan Purcell were next best with 60 and Stephen Hayes was 6th with 61. The next event in the schedule takes place at Killarney Golf Club where home professional Danny Sugrue will be hoping to make it two from two and build a lead on the PGB Order of Merit. The Killarney event is sponsored by Titleist and takes place on Monday 17th November.
