Castlemartyr Golf Club might be one of the newest clubs in Munster but the small club is growing and developing. Several original committee members who have served their time are taking a break while a new committee will seek to consolidate the work to date. The club held their AGM last week and Tommy Hartnett was elected Captain.
Hartnett described the ongoing “This year Don Murphy, Michael Harrington, Shane Casey, Tadhg Harris and Martin Hennigan all stepped down. All these members were involved with the committee for many years, with Don being a past Treasurer and Martin being Captain in 2012. We have five new committee members and I think that new blood will bring new ideas to the fore and the club can continue to improve in all areas. Our outgoing captain, John Paul Twomey raised the bar last year and brought the club to a new level, especially regarding sponsorship and team performance. Credit must go to JP for the time and commitment he gave to the club over the past number of years.”
Starting from a small base in 2008, the club has grown and Captain Hartnett has set his committee some objectives to build on the increase in numbers: “My aim as captain is to see the club progressing further again, especially in the areas of junior golf, and team competitions. Last year was the first year that we had a juvenile section and this year we aim to increase the number of juveniles playing with our club. Success in the long term depends on have a proper juvenile infrastructure in place. This is an area that the new committee fell very strongly about and is set to act on, and improve. On this front I know we can count on the support of club professional, Brady Sherwood and assistant pro, Alan Gleeson. Both were involved in coaching and tuition in 2014 and continually encourage juvenile involvement and progress.”
Like all Castlemartyr members, Tommy was delighted to see the club feature in the GUI competitions and that’s an area where he’d like to see more progress: “Last year our senior team performed with excellence and won the club’s first Area final when they defeated Douglas in the Senior Cup and earned the right to play Limerick in the Munster semi-final, where they narrowly lost in a very close match. Two weeks previous to this, they lost the Area Final of the Barton Shield to Muskerry by two holes. Muskerry eventually went on to win the National final. This high standard is now our goal in all competitions. The club is also expanding with regard to membership and new members continually joining. We have increased our members playing times and this will allow us provide a better service to all members. The number of sponsored competition continues to increase and thanks must go to all local business’s that kindly support us I look forward to my year ahead as captain and welcome the challenge ahead of me. Hopefully I will continue the work of my predecessors and leave our club in a stronger and better position by the end of 2015.”
