Kinsale’s Cathal Butler carded a one under par 71 in the final round of the Munster Boy;s Open Championship at Mallow Golf Club. Although tied for second place, five behind winner William Small, Butler’s official finishing place was 4th on the countback. After bogey on the tricky par three 16th, he birdied the 17th to go back into the red. On a day when only four players bettered par, Butler’s 71 saw him jump from 10th place to fourth. Conor Roche from the home club was the next best Cork golfer, he finished in 12th place.
The winner William Small from Tandragee shot a final round 70 to win, Small finished on 214 strokes (-2) for the three rounds to emerge as the clear winner in the Gleeson Sports Scene sponsored competition. The Ulster Boys player had birdies on the 4th and 6th to lead at the halfway point, he added another birdie on the par five 12th hole but bogeyed the 16th. Small parred the 16th, 17th and 18th to hold his lead and ended up with a five stroke margin of victory. Marc Boucher (Carton House) also shot a two under par 70 to claim second place, he was tied on +3 with Butler and Peter Kerr from Royal Portrush.
Spain’s Eduard Rousaud was in the prizes again, winning the Under 16 prize and Jack Doherty (Carton House) was runner-up in the Under 16 category. The course in Mallow was in excellent condition considering the rain that fell yesterday. The sun was shining in Mallow for the 54 golfers who qualified for the final 18 holes.
Peter English, Junior Convenor Munster Golf congratulated all the winners and thanked the Officers and volunteers from Mallow Golf Club for all their help over the three days. He also thanked the GUI Officers on duty John Fennessy, Sean O’Leary, tournament director Michael Murphy, and Munster Golf Junior Administrator Margaret Sugrue who has worked on this event since last October. He also thanked long term sponsor, Gleeson Sports Scene who have been a great supporter of the Munster Boys Open Championship for many years.
Many of the competitors will turn their sights on Athlone next week, where the Inter-Provincial Championships at Under 14, Under 16 and Under will take place. Play gets underway in Athlone on Monday.
