Fota Island Ladies recently presented a cheque for over €3,000 to Marymount Hospice. The large donation was the proceeds from their annual charity open day which took place a few weeks ago. Fota Island Lady Captain Anne Horgan was delighted to present Marymount’s Miriam Dennehy with the proceeds and she explained how they raised the funds: ““The money raised was as a result of a recent semi open competition held in Fota Island. It was a four person team event and each team had a Fota member playing with guests. The prizes were again sponsored by Tim Keane, of Michel Jewellers. Michel Jewellers are great supporters of cancer charities, with sponsorship being given to many other golf clubs for similar events to the one held in Fota. Michel Jewellers have been sponsoring this event for many years, and we really appreciate it, as it is difficult to get and maintain sponsorship.” The Fota Ladies have had a busy year competing in a large number of club and inter-club competitions. They now have over 150 lady members and have continued to grow in what is a very positive development for the game of golf in Cork. October’s open seniors team event in Fota was won by a trio from Nenagh who were joined by Lisselan’s Colm Quirke. Michael Ryan, Paddy Heffernan and Sean O’Donnell combined with Quirke for a very impressive 98 points. They had four points to spare over Cobh’s Denis Murphy, John Barry, Des Abbott and Fintan McCabe.
