Castlemartyr Golf Club held its first Open Weekend competition over the Bank Holiday weekend. The club had Halpenny Golf on board as a new sponsor to support this event, with over 200 golfers playing over the weekend. Recent weather had disrupted preparation of the golf course for the weekend, but the course was in great condition on Friday morning as the first golfers headed out. Conditions for the weekend were reasonable if not a little cold for the time of year. This obviously had no effect on scoring as there were some great rounds posted over the weekend. This was especially true on Sunday where there were a number of scores in the high forty’s.
Castlemartyr Captain Tony Loughnane, was delighted with the first major event of the year: “This has been a very successful weekend for the club and it is a great marker for the year ahead. Since the new owners have set foot in Castlemartyr the mood has been very positive. Already we are seeing a lot of investment going into the course. I am confident that this investment will see a very positive return in the coming months as we expect the course to look great in the summer months. This year sees the club hosting its very first Presidents Prize in June. The club is honoured that Peter Alliss, the voice of golf, is President for 2016 and we are expecting that our inaugural Presidents Prize will be a fantastic event.”
Castlemartyr Golf Club will host its next open competition during the June Bank Holiday Weekend which again will be sponsored by L’Oreal. The McCarthy Insurance Scratch Cup weekend will take place during the Bank Holiday weekend in August followed by our Senior scratch cup in September. Despite being a relatively new club, Castlemartyr has secured support from numerous local businesses and Captain Tony Loughnane acknowledged that support: “I feel very fortunate that the club has the support of such fantastic sponsors. You cannot underestimate the value their supports adds to the success of these weekends and for that I am very grateful.”
