Gary O’Flaherty won the Irish Mid Amateur Championship for a second time today in tough conditions in Limerick.  O’Flaherty had a five shot lead going into the final round however difficult playing conditions meant that a win was far from guaranteed at Limerick Golf Club.  He was four shots ahead of Eddie McCormack (Galway) and both golfers matched each other on the front nine.  After three pars each, they both birdied the 4th and they both went on to bogey the 5th.  They both turned on +1 but McCormack started a charge with birdies on the 10th and 12th to cut the lead to three.  O’Flaherty was playing very steady golf but bogied the 16th when his ball spun off the green.  He added a further bogey on the final hole but at that stage he had a comfortable cushion over McCormack who was unable to add to his earlier birdies.

This is the second time that Gary O’Flaherty has won the title.  He won in 2014 but was unable to defend his title last year due to work commitments.  His win this year is even more impressive considering the age has been dropped from 35 to 30 allowing a host of top amateurs into the national event a few years earlier than previously allowed.  McCormack took second place one shot behind the winner and Limerick’s Pat Murray was third thanks to a best of the day two under par 70.  Kenny McGarry was in ninth position, holding his place after 36 holes, Dave McCarthy (Bandon) was 17th, Keith Crowley (Fota Island) was 19th and Sean Barry (Fota Island) was 25th.
