Mahon Golf Club overturned an amazing deficit to win the Irish Mixed Foursomes area final at Lee Valley last night. Mahon lost the first two matches and with the remaining three matches reaching the 18th green, Bandon just needed one more to close out the match. Mahon’s first point came from Fergus Golden and Emer Nation when they won after the match went to the first tie hole. Niall Cronin and Ann Parfrey added a second point on the 18th green to tie the contest. There was more drama to follow. Mahon’s Colin Hussey and Margaret Donovan had been three down after 11 holes, and despite winning a few holes, were still one down playing the 18th. The Mahon pair won the 18th and then went on to win the 19th as well, taking the final point and putting Mahon through to the Munster semi-final.
Mahon lost out at the area final stage last year, losing out to Skibbereen at Bandon Golf Club. They will no go on to face Tramore who were the winners from the East Munster qualifier. The Munster semi-finals and final take place in Gold Coast on Saturday 6th August.
