Davey Barry won today’s second Munster PGA event in Killarney when he shot level par on the Killeen course.  This was Davey’s first win at a Munster PGA event and tops off a good season where he also won on the PGA Irish Region in Rosslare.  Davey had a great start and turned on two under par after recording birdies on the 7th and 9th.  He had a mixed back nine, bogeying the 10th but getting a shot back on the par five 11th.  He dropped shots on the 12th and 13th but got back under par on the short 14th.  A late bogey on the 18th didn’t damage his position at the top of the leaderboard, and his level par 72 was good enough for a one shot win over the field.

Killeen was in great condition for the Titliest sponsored event.  Although there was a short delay while the frost cleared, the course came in for great praise from all of the PGA professionals.  Many commented on the firm fairways while everyone was happy with the fast greens.

There was a local feel to the runners up as Diarmuid Fraser and Dan Sugrue shared second place with 73’s.  John Dooley also turned on -2 but he was five over for the back nine meaning that he was fourth with a 75.  Patrick Sheehy was also tied for fourth place with a 73.  Dan Sugrue was the only golfer to birdie the testing par three’s and he scooped all of the twos pot.  The last of the prize-money was shared between Cian McNamara and Stephen Hayes who tied for 6th place.

“I’m delighted with that win, I’ve come close a few times before and it’s great to actually win my first winter series event.” said the winner.  “Killarney put on such an impressive event today.  The complementary buffet breakfast this morning was such a classy touch.  The course set up was difficult but the day was just perfect, the greens were the best I’ve ever seen down there.”  Davey was very happy with his own game too:  “I drove the ball well which was needed today, it set me up nicely and made my iron shots a little easier.  I was inside 15 feet a lot today but didn’t have the putter on fire.  I started very solid today playing the front 9 in -2 with no bogeys.  I missed for par on 10 from 4 feet and 3 putted the 12th from 15 feet.  Other than that I played some nice golf.”

The third event of the Premium Golf Brands Winter Series takes place in Dromoland on Monday 28th November.
