Leinster Students win for John Murphy

John Murphy proved his credentials as a clutch player when he nailed a six foot par putt on the 18th green to win the Leinster Students title in Newlands today.  Murphy was tied for the overnight lead alongside Cathal Butler and Ben Murray.  Butler’s challenge faded after a few early bogies, the Kinsale man was unable to repeat the form that saw him shoot a course record 64 yesterday.  Murray however kept pace with Murphy and although he went two behind on the 4th hole, he picked up a few birdies and was one behind at the turn.  After Murphy and Murray bogied the 10th, the Waterford man drew level with a birdie on the 12th.  Both golfers bogied the 15th and they were still level going onto the 18th tee.  Although it was a short par five, the pressure was telling as neither golfer made the green in three.  Murphy was left with a six foot par putt while Murray had around nine feet for his five.  Murray missed giving John an opportunity, and the Kinsale man took it nailing his par which was enough to claim the title by one stroke.

Murphy felt a little frustrated recently, he was playing consistently well but came up just short on  a few occasions, but he showed his maturity today grinding out pars and staying patient.  “I’m delighted to pick up another trophy, I had put myself in contention a lot recently and I just had to stay patient” said a delighted Murphy.  “I obviously felt under pressure all day but that’s natural.  Ben wasn’t giving in, we were tied the whole way but I just managed to clinch it on 18.  I held a really good par putt after playing the 18th quite poorly.  I was a little nervous over the putt but I just trusted myself and ended up hitting a really good putt and it felt really good to go in.  It made winning it feel even better.”

Being in contention seems to sit well with the Kinsale man, and with a big title on the line Murphy didn’t overthink things while sitting on the lead.  “I felt fine last night, when I’m off the course I try to switch off golf mode.  But ironically enough myself, James Sugrue and Rob Brazill went to the Curragh and hit a bucket of golf balls at some pole 220 yards away, so that was a bit of craic.”

James Sugrue had a tough close to his challenge, he recovered from four early bogies by posting four straight birdies from the 10th to the 13th.  He dropped four shots in his final three holes to sigh for a 75 and drop back to 6th place.  Butler finished with a 78 which saw him drop back to 8th place.  He did have the consolation of winning the team category alongside Kyle McCarron and Eugene Smith.  Sean Desmond finished in 13th place after a closing 72 and Gary Ward was one stroke back in 15th place after his 72 saw him jump seven places.
