Cork interest continues in Lahinch, Ladies Irish Close

Two Cork teenagers will face off in the final 16 of the ILGU Close Championship at Lahinch tomorrow.  Sara Byrne from Douglas will play Mitchelstown’s Valerie Clancy in the second match tomorrow morning.  Clancy had a 2&1 win over Lisa O’Shea while Byrne won on the 16th against Nicola Coffey.

Cork’s Rachel Thompson also won on the 16th, closing out her match against Maeve Rooney.  Mairead Martin and Paula Walsh both have daunting matches ahead of them in the morning.  Walsh will take on the Lahinch star Sinead Sexton who finished best qualifier on -4 after 36 holes, Sexton had an 8&7 win today to make it to the second round with ease.  Mairead Martin will play Olive Mehaffey, the current Irish Open Champion.  Martin beat Carlow’s Karen Delaney after their mathc was finally settled on the 19th,while Mehaffey won 8&7 against Linda Toomey.

AIG Cups & Shields kick off in Macroom & Muskerry

Macroom and Muskerry will be busy places this weekend as the first major weekend of the 2016 Cups & Shields campaign starts.  The AIG Jimmy Brien Shield will see 22 Cork clubs battle over four matchplay rounds with the hope of qualifying for the Munster finals in Douglas in July.

2015 South Munster winners Lee Valley were beaten last week in one of two preliminary matches in Macroom. Bandon got the better of the Munster semi-finalists and they now go on to face Raffeen Creek in the first match tomorrow morning.  Skibbereen beat Bantry Bay in the other preliminary match and they’ll face Lisselan in the first round proper.  Hosts Macroom play Fernhill and Dunmore face Kinsale in the other match.

Clancy & Thompson in Top Ten at Lahinch

Six of the nine Cork golfers in the Women’s Close have made it through to the matchplay stage which starts tomorrow morning.  Mitchelstown’s Valerie Clancy finished the 36 hole stroke play qualifier in 8th place.  A one under par 73 in he second round saw he jump up the leaderboard.  Cork’s Rachel Thompson recorded a 75/76 to also finish on +3.

Kanturk’s Mairead Martin was the third Cork golfer to finish on +3.  Paula Walsh (Doneraile) finished in 16th place and Sara Byrne and Gillian O’Leary (now representing The Island) also made the cut to get into the matchplay.  Lahinch’s Sinead Sexton led the way with a -4 total, three strokes better than second placed Chloe Ryan.  Olivia Mehaffey, Maria Dunne and Mary Doyle are all safely through to the next round.

Cork Golfers in action in Irish Ladies Close at Lahinch

Play got underway early this morning at Lahinch at the Irish Ladies Close Championship.  there are eight Cork golfers in action in the field of just over 60 golfers.  Cork’s Rachel Thompson and Paula Walsh (Doneraile) are representing the Senior Cup winners from last weekend and Sara Byrne is representing semi-finalists Douglas.  Killarney duo Mariead Martin (Kanturk) and Valerie Clancy (Mitchelstown) are also in action.

After today’s two rounds, the top 32 golfers will advance to the matchplay stage.  Lahinch Golf Course is one of Ireland’s top links courses and has hosted a number of high-level championship events in the past. The Irish Ladies’ Close Championship was held there in 2007 when Carlow’s Karen Delaney was crowned champion. Charleville CBS win North Cork Schools

North Cork SchoolsThe North Cork Schools’ Championship that took place in Mallow Golf Club yesterday. This years winners were Charleville CBS who won by two shots from Davis College, Mallow on a gross score of 236.  The format was a four man team with the best three gross scores to count.  The best nett individual prize was won by Greg Barrett (Davis College) with 69 nett off four handicap.  This was also the best gross score on the day.  The Charleville team consisted of Johnathan O’Brien, Cathal O’Carroll, Santiago JuanQuera and Jordan Boles and were managed by Niall Corcoran.  The event was organised by Eoghan Long.

Father & Son Foursomes at Castle Golf Club

Castle Golf Club is delighted to announce that for the third year running Cpl Resources are the proud sponsors of the All Ireland Father & Son Foursomes competition which will be held at the club in July.  Paul Carroll of CPL said that “this is one of those great tournaments in Ireland that builds and nourishes future talent, relationships and values which is also core to our business”
Qualifying will take place on an 18-holes strokes format on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July. The Cost of entry is €70 per pair.  It is the 56th year of the event and it is expected that this year’s event will once again attract over 500 hopefuls on the two qualifying days, representing over 100 different clubs who will all experience the renowned Castle welcome. 64 pairs will qualify for the match-play stages of the event, which will run from Monday 6th July until the Final on Sunday 10th July.

Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Ð Pro-Am Qualifying Competition

Two Cork clubs will be represented at the K Club today for the final of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Club Challenge.  Both Fernhill and Fota Island will play in a fourball qualifier that will see the winning team qualify to play in the Irish Open Pro-Am next week.  Pauline J McKechnie and Anthony O’Connell will represent Fota Island while Cathy McGuinness and Tony O’Donovan will head out in Fernhill colours.  Killarney and Tipperary were the other successful qualifiers from the competition which was held in Dooks Golf Club two weeks ago.

22 teams from golf clubs across Ireland will do battle this today on the Smurfit Course at The K Club in the final of this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Club Challenge – with a chance to play alongside international golf superstars and world famous celebrities in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Pro–Am at stake.

The qualifying events took place at five of Ireland’s top golf courses, including Powerscourt GC in County Wicklow, Hollystown GC in Dublin, Rockmount GC in Belfast, Dooks GC in County Kerry and Galway Bay Golf Club, all of whom donated their excellent facilities in support of this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

The theme for this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, hosted by the Rory Foundation at The K Club (May 19-22) is ‘History in the Making’ and that will certainly be the case when, for the first time ever, one lucky club team lines up to play alongside a top golfer in the prestigious Pro-Am competition.  This initiative is part of Europe’s Race to Dubai Champion Rory McIlroy’s five-point plan to drum up support for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open from Ireland’s 420 golf clubs, as well as helping to further develop the game of golf in Ireland.
