Howard wins in Thurles, Munster PGA

Jack Howard chalked up another PGA win on Monday, finishing joint first at the Munster PGA Winter Series event in Thurles.  It was a first trip to the mid Tipperary course with host Raymond Ryan ensuring there was a warm reception for all the players.  Howard led the way in the 14 hole competition, the Fota Island assistant had birdies on the 2nd and 3rd but dropped a shot on the 11th.  He recovered with birdies on the 15th and the 18th to claim a share of the lead.  Paul O’Neill from Shannon also had four birdies and a bogey to tie the lead while Limerick’s Tim Rice birdied the final four holes to recover from being one over with four to play.  Jack Ryan, the new assistant in Castletroy was fourth with a two under return whole Ronan Collins, Raymond Ryan and Mark Collins all finished on one under.  It was a double success for Jack Howard and Paul O’Neill, they partnered with Ronan Collins for a winning 54 points in the team event.  Second place went to Mark Collins, Jack Ryan and Shane Irwin.

Blarney President Paul O’Neill held President’s Prize dinner last week and it marked the latest major event in a busy year for Blarney.  The resort hosted the Munster Boys Under 16 and the Boys Interpro’s in a busy season that included several other local events.  The Interpro’s were the big-ticket event, putting the resort on the map nationally and President Paul was delighted with the outcome.  “We hosted very many classics and societies in the past however the Muster Boys proved to us that we had the capability to host a major event, and the Boys Interprovincials is one of the GUI flagship events.”  Hosting a major event is a big undertaking.  As well as taking over the course for up to a week, the GUI also depend on a substantial amount of support from local volunteers.  Blarney members were not found wanting as Paul explained.  “We sent up a flare for our members to act as stewards, fore caddies and helpers, and to be fair we were amazed at the response.  We easily covered each area that may have caused concern for young golfers who were not overly familiar with the course.  But, these are among the best in the country so our main task became ball spotting and according to the team’s managements and players we did an exceptional job.  That point has been reinforced by the GUI representatives.  This is a young club (just 11 years in existence) and to successfully pull Continue reading

David Higgins (Waterville) was the only golfer to break 70 at the Munster PGA Winter Series event in Castlemartyr today.  The Kerryman won his first event of the 15/16 series and is now in with a strong shout for the order or merit title with events in Waterville and Monkstown left on the schedule.
