Monkstown came up just short of winning a Munster pennant at the Irish Junior Foursomes yesterday. Woodstock in Co Clare was the venue for the Munster finals and the Cork club beat Newcastlewest in an exciting semi-final match. That led to an afternoon final against Ballbunion. Unfortunately for Monkstown they were well beaten in the final, Sean Desmond and Cillian Desmond lost in the first match and Shane Livesey and Fionn Murray also lost in the second match.

Munster Boys Team Announced
The long wait is over and the names of th seven strong Munster Boys Inter-Provincial team has been announced.
As expected Kinsale feature strongly with Cathal Butler, John Murphy and Mark Healy all getting the call-up. Anyone from Kinsale could have argued for one or even two more inclusions but the selectors went with the three. Monkstown’s Sean Desmond is the fourth Cork member of the team that will take part in the Inter-Provincial Championships next week in Athlone Golf Club.

Murphy Goes Low for 4th Place Finish in Irish Boys Open
Kinsale’s John Murphy went low on the final day of the Irish Boys Open in Tuam, and doing so rocketed up the leaderboard to 4th place. Murphy had a poor finish on Thursday, after starting well he dropped five shots on the back nine. There were no such mistakes on Friday, he was the only golfer to beak 70 as he recorded five birdies and two bogies for a closing 69. Murphy won recently won the Under 18 Medal at the Leinster Youths has shown great form at inter-club level and will no doubt be looking forward to the Munster Boys Open Championship in Mallow in two weeks.

Sean Desmond in Top 10 at Irish Boys
Monkstown’s Sean Desmond shot a one under par 71 in the second round of the Irish Boys to climb into the top 10. Tuam Golf Club is the venue for the 72 hole competition and Desmond carded five birdies in his round today. He was three under through the 13th hole but he gave back two shots with bogeys on the 14th and 15th. A 36 hole total of 145 (+1) see’s the Monkstown golfer in a tie for 7th place. Continue reading
