Castlemartyr announced themselves as contenders for the Barton Shield last weekend when they qualified for the area final on Sunday next.  Castlemartyr were the only team to play in all four rounds, and the beat Cobh in the preliminary round.  They beat hosts Douglas with a comprehensive nine hole winning margin on Saturday afternoon to set up a match with Kinsale on Sunday morning.  Continue reading

The newly formed Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI) were out in force last week at the Irish Open, giving over 800 free lessons in their customised driving range at the Irish Open.  The CGI were also in Cork earlier in the week to host a business planning seminar for golf clubs.  The event was jointly hosted by the CGI and Mardyke Arena UCC and it took place in Lee Valley Golf Club. Almost 150 amateur golfers got a chance to tee it up with tour professionals yesterday as the Irish Open Pro-Am took place in Fota.  Play got underway at 7.50am and even at that stage the sun was out and temperatures were hitting 20 degrees.  The attendance at the pro-am was an estimated 7,000 spectators which ranks highly on the European Tour schedule.  The majority of places in the pro-am are reserved for the event sponsors but there were a few golfers that secured their place thanks to qualifying competitions. You can expect golf to be the main topic of conversation next week as the Irish Open takes place in Cork.  And while Fota plays host to over 150 of Europe’s top golfers, several other courses are getting in on the action.  Cobh and Monkstown are two of the clubs with events planned around the Irish Open and Castlemartyr has created their very own fringe festival around the main event.  Continue reading
